Vatican - Long Line for Buying ticket or get into Museum with ticket

I have been reading up on Vatican museum entry. It is unclear that the long 2 hour wait is for individuals with tickets or to buy a ticket? Vatican on its website sells individual tickets for particular time and dates. We wanted to save $$ by avoiding group tour. Any advice. Thanks.

Hi Rashmi,
If you want to save money, don't buy a tour, and don't let them charge you an extra 5 Euro for reservations either. Arrive at about 1:00 on a weekday and you will walk right in. The two hour lines are a thing of the past except for the free admission days on the last sunday of each month, or the day after a holiday.

Ciao!

I agree with Ron. We were there last month. We arrived at 12:30pm on a Saturday and there was absolutely no line. Walk straight in and into security.

Going all the way, we are ok to buy tickets and reserving them ahead of time as we are going in month of Aug and cannot take a chance with a small baby. Thanks for the tips.

I'm going in August too, so I too was considering reserving tickets with the extra 4 euros. I was worried since it's the peak of the tourist season.

Are there long lines to climb up to the Dome?

Rashmi, I read if you reserve tickets on the Vatican site and print out the ticket, go straight to the doors and show it to security and you get ushered through... apparently, it's not clearly marked that you can go past the people waiting.

That is good to know. All travel books talk about 2 lines - one for individuals and one for tour groups so its hard to tell that if you are an individual ticket holder, what one should do.

I agree with Ron & Kristin. I just returned from the Vatican this afternoon and I got there at about 1pm. No waiting in line to get through security. And just a word of advice, as you walked to the museum entrance, there are people out there pushing their tours. I said no several times and the "sales" gal wouldn't leave me alone until I said no for the 5th time. She used the tour as a way to bypass the line and said that there is updated art not covered in the tour books. They're selling the tour for 45 Euros for adults and 20 Euros for kids. It just wasn't worth it for me. Good luck on your trip!

Last July we bought ticket, and walked in, in about 5 min. total, no lines.
