We are looking at an evening tour of the Vatican Museum and trying to decide between using the guided option on the Vatican website or a private company (probably The Roman Guy). The Vatican tour is half the cost. Has anyone an opinion of whether or not the private company is worth the difference in cost? Are the Vatican tour guides knowledgeable? Maybe there is a big difference in the size of the group? Thank you in advance!
Hello Linda,
The Roman Guy gets really good reviews. I really enjoy watching their many YT vids about Rome.
Perhaps the investment would be worthwhile. They do have smaller groups.
The time of day, day of the week, and time of the year can make or break a tour.
Have fun.
We used The Roman Guy for a private tour of the Colosseum. Our guide was an archeologist and fantastic. We saw her the next day giving a tour at the Vatican. We had a tour through the Vatican but it was a special one for the blind since my husband is legally blind. The museum people giving us this special tour were outstanding.
I can't give a review because I've not done this yet but: we had the same question and are doing the same planning. We decided to book a more-expensive tour (yes, The Roman Guy) so as to secure an early entry to the Vatican--specifically the Sistine Chapel.
So if that's why you are considering a private tour--I say go for it. I mean, I'm going for it. But if your half-the-cost tour provides that as well, please let me know where to find that tour! Because that's the reasons we are paying for the private company tour. We want to avoid crowds as much as possible.
We had the same dilemma but ended up going with the evening tour with the Roman guy. I have heard from friends that it was fantastic.
Wow, thanks for such good feedback. Sounds like The Roman Guy might be the way to go. Price matters, but the experience matters more. I appreciate your comments very much.
