Help break through the confusion. Do women still need to wear dresses/skirts (below the knee) to be admitted to the Vatican (St. Peter's, Museums, Sistine, etc.) or can they wear pants?
From the North American Pontifical College website:
Dress in good taste is requested. Shoulders must be covered. Shorts are not permitted, and skirts should fall in length below the knee. A head covering is not necessary, however, in the summer sun it may be helpful.
It's all about respect. As the above says covering of knees and shoulders. I have been twice and worn pants and a shirt with sleeves and have been fine. It's not the pants vs skirt/dress issue - it's the length of the garment.
Im' wearing capris which fall below my knees. I hope that is okay.
We were in line at St. Peter's and saw a young woman wearing a mini-skirt. When she saw the guards, she moved to the other side of the line in an attempt to pass, but they saw her and did not let her pass. Capris will be fine.
On 7 Aug 7007 the were letting males in with cargo type shorts, females with capri's and longer shorts that covered knees. They were turning away uncovered shoulders on either sex, short shorts, short skirts, and the woman who had her shoulders covered with damp sweaty paper towels!
Was just there - pants are fine for women. Most women wear capris that come below the knee. Shoulders must be covered. They will let you through the security line often with "inappropriate clothing" but then you block you from actually entering St. Peter's.
