Is there a big difference it using the third party guided tours verse on site guided tours? I see the on site guided are tours less costly and difficulty to get, also you have a limited window to secure tickets and the websites are not intuitive to use.

I find the tours offered by the official sites to be very good. They are much cheaper than private companies as well. Most book about 60 days in advance. I don't find the colosseum regular tour or the Vatican tours difficult to get on at all and the websites are pretty straight forward as far as booking goes. For the colosseum tour you'll need to call to make that reservation but the tour only costs 5 euros plus cost of admission.
