We are planning to visit the Vatican and the Colosseum. I have two questions: 1) what ticket do I purchase for each? (not sure if we want to do a guided tour - advice needed) 2) What time of day is best for each? We will be in Rome from early evening October 9 to anytime Friday, October 11. Thanks for your input!

Tickets for the Vatican Museums went on sale a month ago for all dates until the end of the year. It looks like general admission tickets are still available for 2 people late afternoon on Friday, October 11, but none on October 9 or 10. It seems that the guided tours for individuals are no longer available for any of your 3 dates….but you can use an audio guide with the general admission tickets. If you want the tickets on October 11, you probably should act fast. Late afternoon tends to be less crowded, but still very crowded.
Tickets for the Coliseum go on sale 30 days in advance (Rome time), with some tickets only 7 days in advance. Guided tours go quickly, as to tickets for the Underground and Attic.
