I am going to be in Rome the week after Easter. As I am looking at Vatican City/St. Peters Basilica information I cannot tell if it is free or you need to purchase a pass. Do we have to pre- register to reserve a time to visit? It looks like you have to pay to get in the Vatican Museums. Is that correct?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
Steve
Hi -
You cannot visit the Vatican Museums without paying for a ticket. St Peter's is free but you will likely have to stand in a longish security queue to enter the church.
Here is the website for the Vatican Museums:

You may choose to visit the museums with or without a guided tour. "Open tour" tickets mean choosing to visit on your own without a guide.
I was in Rome a few years back during Easter week. Dont skip out on St. Peters Basillica and the Sisteen Chapel if you are going to be in Rome only once in your lifetime. The line for the Vatican is very long, especially with the influx of people due to Easter. I opted for a tour through Viator. Yes, it cost money but it includes admission, you learn a lot, access to both and best of all, you bypass the long line! Best decision I made!
By-passing the lines is big.
The line for the Vatican is very long
"The Vatican" involves different lines: St. Peter's has its own security queue as does the Vatican Museums/Sistine Chapel. You don't want to try and do the museums without an advance, timed-entry ticket for skipping a really long ticket line. The Sistine is IN the Vatican Museums so doesn't need a separate ticket.
This lists all the tours the Vatican offers.

If you elect to do the Museums and St. Peter's the guide will escort you to the Basilica.
