Vatican - best time/day?

Im going to Rome in 2 weeks & want to book a time for the Vatican prior to departure. We will be there Sun through Fri (leaving Fri so really Thurs is the last full day). What is the best day(s) and times to book for the Vatican? The RS Rome book says the crowd subsides a bit in the afternoon, but a reserved entry time may negate that. Would prefer to start in AM or afternoon (as opposed to middle of day) as to allow for other activities later in day (unless this takes the entire day). What have experiences been?

Ron in Rome answers exactly this question here. He's also loaded with other information about visiting Rome and the Vatican.

Thanks... I checked it out & definitely a lot of good info. I'll plan on going Tuesday afternoon, seems like the crowds will be less than. Will likely still book in advance, just to make sure there are no issues - would give me some piece of mind to know that we would definitely get in with little wait at that time.

Surprisingly this week - perhaps due to the heat - the Vatican Museum lines seemed to be shorter? We walked by this Sunday AM (about 09:30) and the "free Sunday" wait was only about 300 meters long - the smallest lines I've seen in 5 years? There were still long lines on the other mornings and Saturday was very, very busy, but when we entered Thursday, it was pleasantly less crowded. Of course, it was also about 93'F.
