The New York Times has reported that "fter more than a month reduced to cash-only status, the Vatican reached a deal last week to restore credit-card use inside the Vatican, including the revenue-generating Vatican Museums." Does anyone know when this goes into effect?

From the Vatican Museum website (it is the museums you're interested in, correct?) looks to me like it's immediately. That said, I'll HIGHLY recommend pre-ordering tickets through the museum website so that you can skip long queues at the entrance. The website is very easy to use, and you'll be reserving s specific day and time slot. They accept a range of credit cards for payment: http://biglietteriamusei.vatican.va/musei/tickets/do
