Vatican and St. Peter's on Saturday or Monday

My husband and I are flying to Rome in a few weeks. I have so many questions, but i'll just start with this one first. Do you think it would be better to see the Vatican and St. Peter's on Saturday or Monday? Thanks. Misty

Tough one. Time of year might matter, as well as if Monday is an Italian holiday. Do you have specific dates?

I went to the Vatican museums on the last Monday of August with a 3 pm entry, and found the crowds tolerable. We went through fairly quickly (my 14 yo son was a trooper about going to all these art museums in Italy, but 2 hours was about his uppermost limit), left the Sistine chapel on the coattails of a large tour group through the side door, and climbed the dome around 5 pm, then enjoyed looking around St Peter's basilica, all with tolerable crowds.
