Vatican and Luggage

Will it be a problem if we have luggage when we visit for our tour of the Sistine chapel and museum? I know there are places where you can check bags, but does this include carry on luggage? Thanks! Brian

Hmm, interesting question. I would expect they will ask you to check your bag, rather than let you carry it through the museum and run the risk of you bumping into other people, artwork, or having a bomb (not that you would). I didn't use the bag check at the Vatican, but the one at the Uffizi Gallery was somewhat like a coat check where they had cubbyholes for each bag. I'm not sure they would hold a rolling suitcase, but a big backpack, probably.

More to the point, is there a reason your luggage is accompanying you to the Vatican? I'm guessing you will either be coming or going and not able to store your bags at your hotel/B&B/apartment? Can you leave it at the train station?

I've never heard this request either. There is a bag check for each - and I've been asked to leave my umbrella - but I've never seen anyone check luggage. To get into both the museum and basilica you have to go through X-ray machines... so it goes to figure if you can't fit your luggage into the X-ray machine, it cannot go inside.

I've also been refused entry into the Wednesday public service when carying my motorino helmet... so again, they will say no. I'd just go to the Holy See website and ask them!!

Good luck! Ciao,
Ron

Knowing restrictions on buildings such as the Vatican, I would guess that you cannot take anything into it.
I dont think you want to be dragging luggage around all day anyway. Find a place to check it at the RR station or the air terminal when you arrive in Rome.

The problem is that we are leaving Rome that day. We are staying in the Trestevera the night before and after our tour we need to catch a train to the port for our cruise. It seems that you can check luggage at the "Cloakroom (visitors are asked to check-in bags, backpacks or bulky luggage)".

Thanks!

Okay - if you're leaving from Rome to Civitavecchia you can catch the IC Plus right next to the Vatican at the San Pietro Station - you will not have to go back to Termini... that saves time.

Let me think about luggage storage options near San Pietro Station. When are you leaving Rome (month)?

Ron,

Thanks! That is great help and will save us time.

We are arriving in Rome on Thursday, August 14 - traveling around Italy (Venice, Bologna, Florence) - returning back to Rome on Wednesday, August 20 and have Vatican tour and leave for the port on Friday, August 22.
