The Vatican is free, and the Vatican museums cost money. But I see these notes online about tickets for the Basilica of St. Peters. But I thought that was in the "free" part of the Vatican. So are the tickets for climbing the dome of the Basilica, or am I misunderstanding? Thanks....
Yes, you’re correct, the Dome climb is not free and I believe requires a timed reservation as well. The treasury museum inside the church is also not free.
The Church is free, as are all the Vatican church, but you still must go through a sometimes very long security line to get into St Peter’s. So beware on the time you go or you’ll be caught in an hours long line.
Dome climb--- unless there has been a change since 2014, you get in line for the ticket booth, pay and then continue in line toward the elevator. Like waiting in line for a Disneyland ride.
There is/was no reserved time to ride.
Thanks to both of you.
