Hi, I would like to repost my queries as I'm unable to locate the post I made this morning. I may have left the button unclicked. This is my first trip to Europe and I'm abit confused with the VAT refund process. Below is my itinerary: 1. Singapore - London 2. London - Paris 3. Paris - Suisse 4. Suisse - Munich 1. After doing some research online, it states that for purchases made in non-EU country is unable to get the VAT refund processed in an EU country airport when departing the EU. Is this confirm? 2. In my case, if point 1 is true, for purchases made in Suisse, how will I be able to get my VAT refund processed? I will be travelling from Suisse to Munich by train.
3. For purchases all in London, Paris & Munich, so long as the proper documents & purchases are presented at the VAT refund counter at Munich airport, the items can get processed. Is this understanding correct? Tks.
In order to obtain a VAT "cheque" you usually have to purchased o/a Euro 155 in a single transaction (you can't add them up from several shops). Not hard to do if you have a thing for oh, say high end purses. The merchant will fill out the form for you. Purchases from Switzerland are not subject to the VAT and therefore do not qualify. So have all your VAT cheques in hand when you get to the airport. Located the VAT refund customs desk (if in doubt ask). They will stamp your cheques. They may want to see your purchases so this will all be done BEFORE you check your bags. Don't wear or otherwise use any purchase you wish to receive a VAT refund on. Be prepared to wait in line - allow plenty of time. After checking your bags and clearing Customs look for a Global Blue or Premier Tax Free kiosk (usually near the duty free shops - ask). They charge a 4% processing fee which is well worth it. You'll get your refund on the spot. You can do this mailing your stamped cheques to the merchant directly but man it'll be months before you see your refund.
MArie, the € 155 limit is not global. It varies according to each country.
I beleive its 175 euros in France. sorry can't help you OP,, I almost never shop on holiday , except for fridge magnets and cheap souvenirs,, lol
Andre is quite correct. I was thinking of Italy. I don't think Ireland has a minimum at all. The shop owners will be in the know on this. Which brings up another point. At the Waterford factory shop in Waterford Ireland U.S. Custom's fee's were collected up front as part of the purchase price which was a first for us. I think only Ireland has that arrangement but wouldn't be surprised if it was also true when buying other luxury goods. Check out Singapore's rule on this before you leave - better prepared than sorry. Have a great great trip!
Hi Marie, Andre & Pat, Thanks for your responses. Will take note and check before my trip. Cheers,
