We are planning a family vacation in Italy next July. We want to go to Vasto, Chieti, for 2 nights, July 1 and 2, 2019 and are finding it impossible to book rooms. There are 3 families, my son, his wife and 3 children, my daughter and her son and my husband and me. We are flexible as far as rooms and sleeping arrangements. We have chosen Vasto because my husband’s grandfather was born there and we want to look up family records. The kids would like the beach yet all hotels are already fully booked or we were told no booking until March of next year! Any suggestions???

There seemed to be plenty of places available for 9 people on airbnb. Try other rental places like booking.com, too, for that many people.

Sorry, I looked at airbnb too quickly --- really not "plenty" at all unless you are willing to stay nearby instead on in Vasto. I hope one of the other rental sites will do better for you and your family.

I looked, however, most of the Airbnb are a little too far from the city.

That’s too early. Try again early next year. You won’t have problems finding places in early July.
Late July and August would be another story, but early in the month won’t be an issue.
