I am staying two nights in Varrena on Lake Como. Doing the cooking class suggested in Rick Steve's book. Any other recommendations on what to do while in the area?

Yes, throw your itinerary into the lake (Rick's words), kick back and enjoy strolling the walk along the lake and cruising the lake to Bellagio and Menaggio. Enjoy!

Ditto what Kent said, but don't throw your RS in with the itinerary :-) Grab a gelato and walk around town especially up the hill to the cemetery overlooking the water, great view.

Check out Hotel Eremo Gaudio in Varenna. It is not right at the dock but set back and above the town.(Walking distance if you are in shape) There are two funiculars that take you up. Trip Advisor's comments are that it has a million dollar view. Seems like any view in Como/Bellagio is just breathtaking, according to my research. We are getting rid of our jet lag there on our trip next month! ...anyone been there???

We stayed at Eremo Gaudio last September and it was great. Very accommodating staff and the views are great. We are going back this september with three other couples because we liked it so much.
