Varrena was a delightfully sweet community. Views were beautiful. We hiked up to the castle, saw all the sights Rick includes and had a very nice time. News flash! the information center at the train station was not very helpful for us. The women really did not wish to talk with us, they gave out very short succinct information which was kind of helpful but not very detailed which left us with a number of questions. Also they now charge an addition fee for train tickets. Varrena is quite small and very wonderful. I think Belagio is larger and has more stuff going on there and I think we would have enjoyed staying there as well, but we really liked the peacefulness of Varrena.
My favorite place to stay on Lake Como!
Just curious, but did you request information in English or Italian? I purchased some train tickets from the ladies there as well as asked for some info on ferries. I did all this in my limited Italian, and they seemed very friendly with me.
Rick
this sounds more like a language barrier than someone not wanting to help, not unless you speak fluent Italian.
Is there actually an information center there now? Or are you referring to the travel agency who sells tickets, down the hill from the rail station?
Yes, there is actually a visitor center there and there were two staff women working there at the time we went in. They both spoke English. We do not speak Italian. I don't believe it was a language barrier, although they may respond more positively to someone who attempts to speak Italian. We just went in and asked for some help and directions, and about taking the ferry. As I said, their response was a bit terse. Nevertheless we traveled to the other towns and had a great time. We just thought it would be good to give an update for future travelers.
