Various Questions on Ortisei & Lift/Trail Access

Family and I will be staying in Ortisei June 6 - 11. We will not have a car. We will likely have the six-day Gardena card.

I would appreciate assistance with the following:

  1. Is there a recommended trail/walking path from Ortisei to Santa Cristina to Selva? If so, in which direction would I get the best views?

  2. What is the best way to access the Sassalungo Group loop trailhead?

  3. What is the best way to access the Forcella Sassolungo lift?

  4. Can you recommend any beginner-friendly via ferratas?

Thank you!

Recommend looking at the Barton's book Walking Val Gardena. Excellent resource, better than me trying to cover it that's for sure. All great hikes with #1 offering a nice change of pace. And that reminds me, depending on time of year you're traveling it might be good to have some low elevation hikes in mind. Last time there we got snowed out up high.

Last year, I had hoped to walk from Selva to Ortisei. When I got to the trail access point in Selva, I found that the trail was closed. I don’t know why or how you could find this out ahead of time. I did walk to Ortisei, but mostly on the roads.

  1. I walked from St Cristina to Ortisei last September. It took about an hour. The beginning was a very nice walk along a stream and then we had to move to a path beside the road (not the shoulder, it was a separate path. Honestly, it wasn’t all that scenic, certainly nothing compared to hiking in the mountains. We were sorry we did it. The bus is much easier and faster. It is free with the pass you should get from your hotel. I forget what it is called; it is not the lift pass, which you have to pay for.

  2. I’m not sure where exactly you want to start, but we took the Monte Pana and Mont Seuc lifts up from St Cristina.

  3. I’m pretty sure there is a bus to the Forcella Sassalungo lift from Ortisei. However we walked from St Cristina, well, after taking the two lifts up to Monte Pana then Mont Seuc It is quite a long walk, but gorgeous. The Forcella Sassolongo lift is really fun with spectacular views from the top. Don’t miss it.

    1. No via ferrata lift is beginner enough for me!

I will be hiking the Sassalungo Group Loop in July. We plan to take the "free" bus to the trailhead.

You didn't mention about Seceda. But if you do plan to take the Seceda lift, i heard starting this June you will need to book a time slot even if you have the gardena pass.

I have been researching this topic for our upcoming trip in August. We will also don't have a car and plan to buy the gardena pass.
