Spending a week on Lake Como in the summer - which city would you recommend? No kids, just adults. We want to take ferries to Bellagio, maybe find a cooking class somewhere, enjoy the lake and views, relaxed dining
You can do all of the above from either.
I like Menaggio, primarily because I like to go to Lugano, which is a quick drive from Menaggio (but I have a car). Varenna is smaller and along the railway. Most people in this forum travel by train, so they prefer Varenna.
Thanks so much! without a car...I booked an airbnb for 6 nights in Varenna w lake views. Il Caminetto is a restaurant w cooking classes - hope to get into that.
We were in Varenna last summer and it was amazing. You will love its peaceful, easy vibe. Make a dinner reservation for La Vista restaurant with Albergo Milano - it was delicious with a view that cannot be beat.
I enjoyed Varenna as a base. Took a ferry to Menaggio and was quickly bored and moved on, although that was a weekday morning and likely not a fair test. Went on to Bellagio which was great -- fancier, more commercial, many restaurants and shops, spent a couple of hours strolling through the estate which had been owned by Napolean's Vice-President, or whatever. That was a lovely time, including gardens, forests, museum, etc. along the coast. With the lake behind you, it was a good walk to the right, from the center of town. I think there is another nice estate there too, in the other direction. Enjoy!
It's great to hear that you've now got a reservation in Varenna. It's a great "home base" location for that area, with easy access by train and easy access to the Ferries. The Ferry dock is in front of Hotel Olivedo, and there's a ticket office there.
I've stayed in both towns. Menaggio is flatter so easier for walking. Also, it has the most regular businesses and hotels. Varenna is somewhat more picturesque with fantastic views. The ferry will take you to the villages. Both towns have a pleasant central piazza.
