Em,

A day trip is feasible, but it's going to be a long day.

The trip from Varenna to Tirano will be about 1.5 hours and to Tirano another 2.5 hours. You could use a departure from Varenna at 08:24, arriving at 09:52. There's a direct departure to St. Moritz at 10:03, arriving 12:36 and hopefully you'd be able to connect with that one.

The return trip is a bit more problematic. You'd have to leave St. Moritz at 16:48, arriving Tirano at 19:00. From Tirano to Varenna there are departures from Tirano at 19:08, arriving Varenna at 20:36 and hopefully you could connect with that one.

According to my Hewlett-Packard, that will leave you 4H:12M to explore St. Moritz, and would require a full 8 hours of travel (with the routes I mentioned above). You'll have to decide whether that's worth the effort.

I traveled to st. moritz from milan via the Bernina Express in june. It's best for an over-nighter.

I took the regional train from Milan to Tirano...then Bernina Express to St. Moritz. The train ride through the Alps is the best part. great photos.

If you try to do it in one day, you'll be tired of traveling!

yes, I realize it's somewhat arduous... i'm hoping it's worth all the trouble but have to admit it's tempting!

Ken, you are right, per your suggestion I looked up the trip and if we can manage taking the first train leaving Varenna, we might just be able to pull it off - it will be hectic not doubt but still feasible - i'm quite excited to try. The question now is what can see in the few hours we have to spend there.
