We are staying two nights in Varenna Italy and on 3rd day early morning, we hope to get to St Moritz to catch the 10:02 GLacier Express to Zermatt. Are there taxis or cross border rental car that we can take ? Going by train may not get us on time. Kindly advise.
We did the reverse but from Pontresina near St Moritz to Bellagio, near Varenna. We picked up and returned our car at Milan MXP. Cross border rental car drop offs incur huge fees plus you will need a Swiss Vignette sticker for the car. I think Pontresina to Bellagio took us about 4 hours, including using the Lake Como ferry. You would be safer booking the train tickets for the next day. I imagine a taxi would be pricey, Email David Guerrero in Como for a quote.
[email protected]. We have used him several times from MXP to Bellagio, reliable, fair . pricing.
You don't really need a taxi all the way to St Moritz. You can get a train at 5:48 from Colico on the north end of the lake to Chiavenna arriving at 6:18 and connecting to a bus to St Moritz departing Chiavenna at 7:06 arriving at St Moritz at 8:42.
It is 21 km from Varenna to Colico station, so it should not be too bad. The train-bus connection can probably be bought at the local travel agency in Varenna. The train portion is 3.30 EUR and the bus portion is 27 CHF according to SBB, or equivalent in EUR.
Thank you for your quick reverts. I've written to David to check if he does drops to St Moritz. If he doesn't, we maybe better off reaching a day earlier as suggested but that'll give us only one night at Varenna/lake Como.
We also evaluated the train plus bus connections suggested...appears doable but we'll have to leave Varenna really early. We might keep that as a backup option. Thank you
