Varenna to Lugano via car?

Hello

We will be in Varenna for 4 nights in September and would love any tips on what to see, eat and do there! However, my bigger question is how is the drive to Lugano? Is a car ferry a ferry that you pull your car onto and drive off? Is Lugano worth a day? We are planning to visit mennagio, bellagio and spend time relaxing. It will be my husband and I and our 5 year old. Thank you!

I presume the fast way to Lugano is to cross the lake on a ferry from Varenna to Menaggio (15 min) then drive from Menaggio to Lugano.

Not all ferries are open to vehicles, so check the timetable below (check the vehicle transport box).
Once in Menaggio, the drive to Lugano is short. Ferry timetable is below.

Be aware that if you drive a rental, there might be restrictions on taking the car on ferries. Inquire and read the rental agreement well.
You can also drive to Lugano without using ferries. You would need to go around the lake . It will take longer, but you can do it.

If you take the ferry and drive from Menaggio to Lugano, it will be on ordinary roads and the Swiss highway sticker will not be required. But if you drive along the lake - Varenna/Lecco/Como/Lugano, remember that for the highway stretch between Chiasso and Lugano you need the sticker. Getting it will not be a problem - you will be stopped at the border point and sold one if you have not - but at SFR 40 (EUR 38.50) is not cheap-

Bellagio is easily accessible by the ferry, no need to take the car that day......more upscale shopping than Varenna, lots of gelato opportunities, and a park near the lake with modern sculpture and some path ways to let your 5 year old let off some energy......
