Hi All:
My husband and I are hoping to take the train into Switzerland while we stay in Verenna for 5 nights in late April/early May. This is part of a longer trip to Italy. I see that the Regular Bernina Red Train leaves from Tirano which appears relatively close to Vernna, and we thought it would be an interesting and beautiful trip for a day. I thought that the "regular" train with the intermediate stops might be good, although I don't have feel for what might be a pleasant and relatively short stop among those that are offered. Plus, the "regular" Red Train provides a variety of schedule options on both ends providing more flexibility, and I like the idea that the windows can open up. I have a few questions on logistics and recommendations. I'm not clear on what the difference is on 1st class vs 2nd class when neither will confirm a specific seat. We don't expect to have a car, so how do we get to Tirano ? Are there taxis or other options? Are there stops that you recommend along the way? Are there recommendations as to a good place to stop for lunch along the way or perhaps at St Moritz? I went to St Moritz many years ago and know that it is lovely but very upscale. We'd like to see it and walk around but are not aiming for a super high end meal/experience. Your recommendations about this as a scenic side trip are much appreciated! Thank you!
There are trains every hour from Varenna to Tirano. In Tirano the Trenitalia station is next to the RhB station, so it is just a matter of exiting one building and entering another and you are on the little red train.
Tickets you can just buy at the station. Maybe the ticket office in Varenna can even sell you the ticket already for the the Swiss part as well, but otherwise just buy it in Tirano.
One interesting option is to travel Varenna - Tirano - st. Moritz - Chiavenna (by bus) - Varenna.
Has Varenna got a booking office now?
