Planning a two week visit to Italy in May 2106. First stop is Varenna. Want to stay long enough to take two days of side trips. Looking for comments on how long to stay. Thinking 4 or 5 days. Want to have enough time for Florence and Tuscany.

I have stayed in Varenna two times and think 4 days is good enough.Day one take ferry to Como,that will be all day,day two take ferry to Bellagio and to Villa Carlotta,day three ferry to Mennagio and spend time in Varenna.

Day trips to where? I presume one to Bellagio, maybe Menaggio. Where else are you planning to visit on the lake?
It's up to you, just keep in mind:
2 nights=1 full day
3 nights=2 full days
4 nights=3 full days
and so on.........
