Any suggestions on lodging in or near Varenna.?
My friend and I will be there in late September.
It seems difficult to find something ... many are booked already.

Don't know if things have changed but we stayed in Casa Rossa at Albergo Milano in 2012. Nice room with a balcony overlooking Lake Como. Casa Rossa is in a building next to the hotel (which also has an excellent restaurant. Hope you don't mind stairs.

It seems unusual that everything is completely booked in late September, although I suppose it's possible. It would help to have some idea where you've looked so far? Are you using the RS Italy guidebook to choose accommodations?

When in September? I just checked the place we stayed in -- Hotel Montecodeno -- and there are vacancies from September 19 to the 26. It is located one block uphill from the waterfront. Rooms were basic, but clean. My only problem was that our room fronted on the very noisy street and I'm a light sleeper.
I found that Hotel Oliivedo has rooms up until September 27.

We stayed here in 2011 and loved it! Maria and her husband were wonderful hosts. They picked us up from the train station and made sure everything was perfect. The apartment is also listed on booking.com if you prefer.
