Varenna--Lake Como

We will be in Varenna for 5 nights, Oct 1-6. We seek an apartment or room, with a balcony and view of the lake. Suggestions.

We highly recommend Albergo Milano! Lovely stay in the annex several years ago and then in 2015 in the main hotel with a balcony. Wonderful staff, comfortable beds and rooms, great breakfast and perfect location. Also had delicious dinner twice in the restaurant on the terrace.

pg,

The previous two suggestions are both good ones to consider. Note that some of the hotels (including Albergo Milano I believe) also have small apartments but I'm not sure if those have a balcony and view of the lake. You could also look at Albergo Olivedo or Hotel Royal Victoria (which does have lake view rooms).

Another endorsement for Albergo Milano! In addition to the main hotel, they also have rooms in another building (aka annex). We've only stayed in the main hotel but would not hesitate to stay in the annex. We had a room with a balcony and full frontal view of the lake. It was a lovely stay.

Another vote for Albergo Milano. We had a balcony overlooking the lake. Enjoyed a nice bottle of wine sitting on the balcony one night for sunset.

The top floor room in the annex ( Casa Rossa) at Albergo Milano is like a studio apartment, as it has a kitchen corner. The room is large and bright, and the balcony is also very large. New have stayed there twice and would choose it again. Lots of stairs---you have been warned!

Several years ago we spent 3 or 4 nights at the Hotel Olivedo with a lakefront balcony. The rooms were large, bright, and extremely clean. The only downside is the owner...she is quite a character, in her own right. She is definitely not the warm and fuzzy type. However, the hotel is right at the navette (ferry) pier and a short walk to the center of town. We only selected the breakfast option and it was quite enjoyable sitting outside in the morning looking at the lake.

One evening the nearby park held an evening concert and the band was really good. They played late into the evening and we were serenaded to sleep. Nice memory.

We would definitely stay there again.

Buon viaggio,

We also stayed at Albergo Milano. Had a room with a full kitchen, not that we cooked, but it was modern and beautiful. Came in handy for picnics.

A little out of the way, and just on the Varenna/Perledo border, we recently stayed at Vista d'Oro.

A link to the specific apartment : http://www.lakecomohomes.com/displayproperty.aspx?p=503

It is about half a mile up the windy road, but the view was amazing. So depending on how many people you have going with you, it could be an option.

The company, Lake Como Homes, was very helpful when we were planning the trip. We didn't have any problems with the apartment, so we really had no reason to contact them during the stay.

We enjoyed our stay at one of Albergo Milano's apartments, 'Casa Gialla' (yellow house), a charming 2 bedroom apartment on the ground floor (without a view of the lake). If you choose to stay at one of their apartments, it includes the breakfast which is served at the hotel's terrace with amazing views of the lake.

You may also consider, Hotel Villa Cipressi, where we almost stayed, but chose Albergo Milano because of the 2 bedrooms.

Have a wonderful trip!

I am planning to arrive in Milan on March 26, and I would like to go to Lake Como for a couple of days. Will we find accomodations and dining options at this time of year? Will the ferries be running?
Thanks, Yolanda

We stayed at Vista d'Oro last year (apparently its a small d and a big O!

I know some people think that being in the village is best but if you are fit, you can get down in 10-15 minutes and back up in 20 via the winding paths only the locals seem to know about. The village is beautiful but parking is expenisve in the new car park for long periods and outside of this impossible. You are unlikely to get a great view either.

If you drink and drive then maybe Vista d'Oro is not ideal, its a couple of minute drive up the hill to Perledo, but if you need absolutely stunning views, slightly cooler in the summer, lots of parking, a couple of pools, then you can't do better in our opinon. We just sat and watched the lake and ferries zipping across, the float planes coming up form Como, drank wine and relaxed!

We get regular updates and the owners now have their own website, which has some great photos too.
