Can anyone recommend a hotel in or near Varenna on Lake Como for three nights in late May? Many thanks. Diana
No but do the cooking class at Il Caminetto for sure
Yes...Albergo Milano is wonderful. They have the actual hotel and then an annex; I can't speak for the annex but the hotel itself was great! We had a room with a lakefront balcony. The view was incredible and the hotel was nice. It was very clean and comfortable and the breakfast was great. We had to leave very early on our last morning to get to Malpensa and the hotel set up breakfast for us the night before in the dining room so that we could eat before we left. If you can splurge for a room on the lakefront, I suggest it.
We stayed at the Orange House. It was nice and very reasonably priced. And I agree with David. Do the cooking class if you can. It was one of the highlights of our 3 week trip.
Diana, Could you specify what "class" of Hotel you're interested in? There's a fairly good selecction in Varenna, and many good listings in the Italy 2011 Guidebook. If you'd prefer more luxurious accommodations right in the main part of town (near the Church), you might have a look at the Hotel Royal Victoria or Villa Cipressi. If you'd prefer more of a B&B-style Hotel, you could consider Albergo Milano or Albergo Olivedo (both of which are easily reached from the station). It would probably be a good idea to start looking at reservations fairly soon if you're planning on travelling in late May. Varenna is a beautiful spot - enjoy!
check a site www.varennaflats.com. Very helpful lady Marlenna who rents houses. We only needed 2 nights so she suggested her aunt Angelina's place, she rents rooms. Wonderful place! Angelina made us feel like she was our Grandmother, so sweet! Best part of our trip!
Very reasonable rates
In 2004, we got a 3rd floor apt thru Hotel Montecodeno. It was wonderful waking to ducks quacking in Italian!
We stayed at Hotel Eremo Gaudio in April 2009. It is about a 15 minute walk from Varenna, but the views are stunning!! The hotel actually sits up on the up slope of the mountain and looks down on the lake. Funicular to the hotel. You definitely should look. Mike
