Does anyone know how to get by train from Varenna to Milan? I've done it before, but can't remember how.

It's very easy. Buy a ticket and board the train from Varenna-Esino to Milano Centrale (or vice versa). The trip is 1H:03M. If using a locally purchased ticket be sure to validate (time & date stamp) prior to boarding the train on the day of travel, or you'll risk hefty fines which will be collected on the spot!
If you need to buy tickets in Varenna and the Kiosk isn't working, visit the Tivano Tours office, which I believe is now located in the station.

Where are you going before Varenna? If the station you are at before then has a ticket kiosk you can also purchase your varena to Milan ticket then. the regionale tickets which is what that line is are good for several days. Once you validate the ticket you have 4 hours to use it. But purchase your ticket at your prior city and don’t worry if the station kiosk is working. I’ve done that twice when in Milan to the lake bought our return ticket ahead of time

You can also buy those tickets on line with Trenord, the company that runs that particular train. You can do it on-line and they also have an app
