Loved last visit to Varenna that am saving money like mad so can repeat that portion of my trip. Last July we took the train from Paris to Milano Centrale. But this time I will be traveling to Varenna from either Rome or Milan (Malpensa Airport)and question is: would it be cheaper and swifter for me to arrive in Rome, take train to Milano Centrale or arrive in Milan, somehow from Malpensa airport go to train station Milano Centrale (and thence to Varenna). Time is not a problem, but money is.
Jackie,
I'd also suggest taking the Malpensa Shuttle from MXP to Milano Centrale. The web site details the costs and other information. You can buy your ticket from the Driver. This is probably the most cost effective option if "money is a problem".
When you arrive at Milano Centrale, buy tickets for the trip to Varenna. You can use either the automated ticket machines or the staffed ticket office, which is two floors down. As I recall, the ticket machines at track level would only accept credit cards, however those adjacent to the ticket office will also accept Euro currency.
As you've been there before, I assume you're aware of which train to take? Don't forget to validate your ticket! Incidentally, you may find on the return journey that the Validation machines in Varenna are "not working". That was the case when I was there in June. If they're still out of commission, I believe you can validate by writing the date and time on the ticket.
Happy travels!
Thanx for prompt response - will do as you two suggested - Malpensa airport, shuttle to Milan Central and train to Varenna. I was just thinking that on my airfare planning (Hawaii/Europe) that maybe more flights go to Rome than Malpensa and giving me more choice of best way to fly -- but I think overall I will stick with going to Malpensa airport.
Definitely into Milan. You will have a layover somewhere on the east coast anyway from Hawaii. MIlan train will be much cheaper
