Should we go for the lateral view room at Albergo Milano or should we stay at Albergo Du Lac in Varenna? Or should we stay at the Hotel Du Lac in Bellagio?

I stayed at Albergo Milano in a room with a side terrace, and it was still fantastic. While not a “full frontal” view, you can see the lake and mountains. The outdoor patio downstairs looks out right over the lake. Plus, the room was great…nice tile floors, very Euro-modern and huge shower, quiet. I will always recommend this hotel.

I neglected to mention that they have an “overflow” hotel a few doors down, and the rooms there also have balconies overlooking the lake directly. The name is Casa Rossa. You may wish to inquire about one of these rooms. It looks like they’ve added some apartments next door since I was there in 2006. Check out their website at http://www.varenna.net/

We stayed at another hotel and were not happy with it. Hotel du Lac looked wonderful--beautiful setting on the lake--it will be on our list to stay there next trip. Bellagio is great for shopping but Varenna has more charm IMO--also good if you are arriving by train.

About 7 years ago I spent a night at the Hotel du Lac in Varenna. I loved it. The buffet breakfast was outstanding, and the outdoor deck looked like a perfect place for tea or a drink. If you can afford it, stay at the Hotel du Lac.
