Varenna - Hotel Eremo Gaudio or Albergo Milano

There's something enticing about being all the way up above Varenna at Eremo Gaudio - but I've been reading so many great things about Albergo Milano as well. Have you stayed at either place? What did you like/dislike about either?

Have stayed at Albergo Milano but not the other. This was last October. Our room with a terrace was very nice. The room was actually on the smaller side, but the terrace was large with two chase lounges and a table and chairs plus a great view of the lake. The location is in town and a short walk to the ferry. The train station is also walkable if you have a minimum of luggage. The restaurant is very good and located on a terrace overlooking the lake. Indoor dining is also available for inclement weather. The owners are wonderful hosts. We had an early morning train that departed before breakfast. They had a table set for us with a thermos container of hot coffee and OJ with Italian pastries. We were greeted by their cute cat. They even showed us how to turn on the lights in the dining area. Very helpful indeed.

We also stayed at the Albergo Milano in September. We had a room with a small Juliet balcony overlooking the lake and looking down onto the terrace. Lovely hotel - great breakfast and the dinner was lovely although it was a tad cold to sit outside. Our room was very nice but on the small side - which
didn't bother us b/c we were oursdie most of the time.

We had a similiar experience as Bob at Albergo Milano. We stayed there in Sept '09 & had a room with a lakefront balcony (the little balcony with 2 chairs). I absolutely LOVED waking up and staring out onto the lake every morning. The views were outstanding and the room and bathroom were very clean and comfortable. We had to depart very early in the morning to get to Malpensa for our flight home & the owners left a table set for us with breakfast items. (We were also greeted by the cat & we accidentally let her out when we left!). We thoroughly enjoyed our stay there, so much so that I've booked a room there for our trip in August of this year. We will be staying in the annex this time but also with a lakefront bacony. You can't go wrong with Albergo Milano but unfortunately I can't comment on Eremo Gaudio. If you're interested in Albergo Milano, book way ahead.
