Lori,

I've noticed that the listings for Rick's "approved" lodgings change from year-to-year. One of the places I stayed at in London is no longer in the book, but as far as I know it's still "approved".

You might send a note to Rick's staff for advice. You'll probably have to "read between the lines" a bit, as the comments are sometimes a bit non-specific.

Good luck!

Lori, Under the Graffitti Wall - Alternate Accommodations Oct. 10/2008 - Ellen has posted positively about Marilena's flats. You might want to check with her. We enjoyed the Orange House B&B, close to everything but no lakeview. An apt. with kitchen would be nice to have if we go back (which we hope to do). Enjoy Lago de Como. Sherry

Hello Lori,
My family: Myself, my wife and our two boys ages 12 and 14 years stayed one week at the Camilia house, an apartment in Pino near Fumelatte, not far from Varenna. The place was very spaceous with cooking facilites, washer/dryer and lots of room for us to stretch out. The views of Lago di Como are unforgettable. On the debit side, we were far from town, thus missing the 'town experience' and the parking space in town was very tight- even for our little Fiat wagon.
As luck would have it, our place had a plumbing problem and Marilena asked us to stay in a place in Varenna while the problem was being sorted out. This place was fantastic, we were in town and felt like we were part of the community. The room had lots of little views of the lake. We liked this place the best. Marilena is a gem. Very kind, helpful and as quick as Ferrari Enzo.
Regards,
David

Lori, Marilena's website is the best showing exactly apartments photos and maps .We spent one week at Camilla cottage and booked it again next autumn,we enjoyed walk into town, our friends booked before us another apartment in the center. You are asking another accomodation, first choice are Marilena apartments,as the other owners websites dont show the reality of them.

Lori, when we found www.varennaflats.com
we booked an apartment for our first trip to Lake Como,it is our first time we say:" We really come back",Marilena apartment is immaculately clean ,comfortable, it has more we have in our own ,price is convenient and the owner is the best landlady we met in our life.We booked Camilla in the suburb one week next September,we have good legs and like to walk the Villa Monastero gardens along and up to the Eremo hotel and going down to the center.Marilena's website is the only one in Varenna showing in advance what you have to pay,the other owners hide many important details, like the exact position of the apartments and don't offer the same amenities.I highly recommend Marilena's website, she fluently speaks english french german and is living in town since she was born.

Go there!
you are asking about any other recommendations?
No possible, Marilena is the best in Varenna, her website is really showing the reality of her apartments for your holiday,we had a fantastic week and plan to be back soon.We like Varenna more than Venice.

Hello All,

A clarification is in order regarding parking for Camillia. It is a very secure feeling having your own parking space in Varenna. You can drive into town on any day or time and park with no problems. We did this once on a busy very Sunday when all other lots were impossibly full. In addition, the Camillia parking space is locked and it has a beautiful view of the lake. It is reassuring knowing that a parking space will always be availible for you.
Sincerely,
David

Lory, many tenants added their reviews on this website. Before I booked ,I called two of them , then I decided to go.I can't wait to visit Varenna again staying in one of those apartments by Marilena not by anyone else.Price related to the quality :this is the difference.

We have a reservation in two weeks at Camilla house based on the high praise Marilena gets in her reviews. However, I did not know we were so far outside of town. She told us we could walk into town in 30 minutes or less. Is this not true?

Hi,I have been in camilla for our anniversary,a 30 minutes walk is more than enough to go into town, the trains helps in 2 minutes, weekly train tickets can be bought at the internet point, but we never took the train, we walked and marilena gave a ride whenever we needed.I hope it can be of help to you.

My husband and I spent a month there just now and we had a wonderful time. Marilena is very thorough and helpful. When the internet connection had a little problem, she spent many hours until it was fixed. She showed me the other apartments and they are all very comfortable and have very good beds, bathrooms, and well-furnished kitchens. We stayed at Marilena House for one month and at Camilla House for one week. It is wonderful to stay at Marilena House because the lake front and square are right there, with shops and restaurants. Walking from Camilla House is less than half an hour along a beautiful path or the road. Many people from the US and other countries stay at Marilena's apartments.
