Varenna day trip: Lugano or Bergamo

Hello - we are in Varenna now. After arriving yesterday, spent rest of day and today relaxing. We’ll spend next two days taking the ferry to various towns around the lake (favorites?).

We are sitting on the balcony of our hotel with a glass of wine, trying to decide between Lugano or Bergamo for a day trip. I realize Bergamo is via train and Lugano will be boat and bus.

Just looking for a “cute” place to walk around, see a few sites, have lunch and return.

Your help is much appreciated.

Lugano is a pretty lake, easier to get to from Varenna, but we preferred Lake Como to it. Would this day trip be in addition to your two days that you’ll take the ferry around Lake Como?
Take ferry to Lenno, walk over to Villa Balbaniello or take water taxi there. Lunch in Lenno.

hey sue
sounds like you guys are enjoying, would love to sit on the balcony with you and wine. My friends did that in Copenhagen on their way to Stockholm today. Cheers
Aloha

Lugano is a good-sized city, also on a lake. Although I've enjoyed a couple of trips there, I'd tend toward Bergamo, a quite different experience. I see good departures from Varenna-Esino at 8:37 and 10:37 AM. You'll change in Lecco.

Another vote for Bergamo but to spend your time in the Città Alta section above the more modern city. It's a really old and interesting place and easily done from Varenna.
