I'm not sure what type of biking you're looking for. If you're looking for city bike/cruiser rentals, you may want to reconsider. Most of the the towns are directly on the lake are are easily walkable and are actually easier to walk than to ride a cruiser through. You'll see what I mean.

You've chose a great little town, Varenna is quiet nice.

If you're looking for mountain biking, there are some decent runs and I think there is one bike tour outfit in Como that sets up day trips using road bikes.

When we were in Menaggio, I noticed several large signs with bike routes that have been developed around the area. Not sure if they are all on the Menaggio side, as we stayed in Varenna as well. The link Laura posted has 2 links--mountain bike routes, and Ciciovia dei Laghi, from which you might be able to discern more information. Your accommodations in Varenna could probably give you more information as well.
