Varenna, Bellagio or Tremezzo to Stay

Dear Helpline Community, We were planning a 3 day trip (7 - 10 oct) to Lake Como staying at Varenna, however it seems at this time of the year the boats will not operate at night and since we don't have a car, we shall have to stay in Varenna, beautiful but very small town as I understand. In addition, I understand there will be some problems with luggage carrying in some hotels in Varenna. Unfortunately I am somewhat restricted in my movements and especially weight carrying. We shall use public transport and taxis where necessary. Now I am hesitating between Tremezzo La Perla, Bellagio Panorama and Albergo Milano, Varenna. All has very limited number of available rooms and we have to decide almost immediately. Are there any suggestions among my choices? Any other alternative suggestion is also very welcome. Many thanks in advance.

My wife and I stayed at Albergo Milano last October. It is a short taxi ride, about 5 minutes or less, from the train station. The owner/manager helped us with our luggage to the second floor. Very helpful in all respects. We had an early train to Milan, before they were open for breakfast. They arranged for an early taxi pickup and had a table set for us with a continental breakfast. Wonderful place and service. Don't think you can go wrong with Albergo Milano. Enjoy your trip.

We loved Albergo Milano but it is built on the steep slope down to the lake and there are a lot of steps to get to or from the hotel. If you can manage the steps without your luggage it should be fine, assuming you can get help with your luggage. You might wish to confirm you will be in the main house. We were in the annex ( Casa Rosa) and on the top floor---lots of steps inside the building as well as getting down or the lakeside and back.

I agree with Bob & Lola regarding Albergo Milano. We stayed there in '09 & loved it. We stayed in the main hotel but no one offered to help with our luggage so my husband carried it up the stairs to our room. The hotel & rooms are very nice and I loved staying there. Lola is right about all the stairs in Varenna. You will need to walk down a long flight of stairs to get to the water & the ferries and then back up the long flight of stairs to get back to the hotel. As long as stairs aren't a problem for you, you should have no problem. I'm not in the best shape and unfortunately got winded when walking up all the stairs to the top of town but I so loved Varenna and particularly Albergo Milano so I would suggest staying there if you can.
