We're looking to stay in Varrena in September for a couple nights. We prefer staying in Agriturismo's but don't see any here. We would like to stay with a local family versus a hotel (unless it is a simple mom and pop hotel). Also...restaurant recommendations?

I don't know of any Agristurismos in that area, so you might have to settle for a B&B, VRBO or whatever. There are also some good hotels. You might have a look at the RS Italy guidebook for both accommodations and restaurant suggestions. There is a 2021 version of the book and the next update will be Fall 2022.
Take a look at Hotel Olivedo. It's a small family run hotel, very convenient, right at the ferry landing in Varenna. The people who run it are wonderful, and the hotel restaurant is excellent. All rooms overlook the lake. We've stayed there a few times and can't say enough good things about the family and their hotel. The Varenna train station is only a few minutes walk from the hotel.
