Varenna

Does anyone know if the train station is manned or is it just a ticket machine?

Shelley, I've seen personnel in the station in the past, but the situation could have certainly changed since my last visit. Is there a particular reason you would need staff there? Cheers!

We were there last September and it was unmanned at that time. We bought train tickets in Milan (to get there) and at a tabacchi shop in Varenna (to return to Venice).

Shelley, If you're concerned about getting rail tickets or reservations, there's an excellent Travel Agency just below the station in Varenna (on the way to the Ferry dock). I believe it's called Tivano Tours. I've found them to be VERY helpful in the past. One other important tip - DON'T forget to validate tickets prior to boarding trains there. If the validation machines are "out of commission", I normally write the time & date on the back of the ticket. I don't know if that's acceptable to Trenitalia, but I figure it's better than nothing. Cheers!

When I was there in 9/10 the stationed was unmanned. We had to purchase our train tickets at the travel agency down the hill a block or so from the station. It is on the way to where the ferry terminal is.
