We are traveling to the Lake Como area next year Sept 26-28. We were hoping to stay at Hotel du Lac (already filled) or Albergo Milano ( already filled for some of the days we requested also since we a group they require a 3 night stay). Does anyone have any other recommendations for relatively inexpensive hotels in Varena? Otherwise any other good options in the area.
This past August we spent three nights at Hotel Olevido in Varenna and were very pleased with the property. It is located right at the lake ferry pontillo (pier). The owner, Laura, takes some adjustment, but overall we were happy. Buon viaggio,
In September 2010 we stayed at the Orange House B&B and I highly recommend it. It has two rooms, one downstairs with a bathroom across the hall (not shared), and one upstairs with an attached bath. We only paid 73€ per night for the room upstairs. The owners do not live on site, but they come each morning to prepare breakfast. It is located between the train station and the ferry terminal and is an easy walk to both.
Is Hotel du Lac already filled, or simply not taking reservations yet? I suspect the latter. We have encountered a number of places in Italy that would not take reservations until January for the coming year.
We loved Eremo Gaudio, which is mentioned in Rick Steves book. Diffently stay in one of the upper level rooms which are accessable on the funicular. The view can't be beat! The hotel decor is simple, and it's a short walk to town, but well worth it. My husband was just saying last night that Lake Como and the evening spent enjoying a bottle of wine on the 6th floor terrace during sunset is his favorite memory of our trip last year. If you have a car, there's free parking. If you take the train, you may want to take a cab from the train station as the walk with luggage might me a bit too far.
