Vareena Lake Como and Milan 6 days

We will finish our 15-day tour in Italy and decided to stay for another 6 days on our own. We decided to go to Vareena Lake Como for 3 days and then take the train to Milan for 3 days. Can we do Lake Como on our own or should we take a tour of the lake for the day? Will there be taxis at the Vareena-Ensino train station to the center of town. We are seniors and have rotator cuff problems dealing with the luggage. When flying out of Milan at 630 AM would it be better to book a hotel at the Airport for the flight home. We will be in Vareena Nov 10-13 and Milan Nov13-16. Never been to either location would appreciate any suggestions.

Thanks Bruce

The fun of Lake Como is riding the ferries and just wandering, you don't need a tour.
Probably best to ask your lodging regarding taxis. Not all lodging is accessible via car, as there are many narrow pathways and stairs. I'm sure you will enjoy this beautiful area. Perhaps take a ferry out to one of the beautiful villas that the RS guidebook discusses.
I would definitely book an airport hotel for the flight out of Milan. When we stayed by Milan Central, the Airport Express train was just cancelled, and we had to wait another 40 minutes for the next one. The train ride from Milan Central to Malpensa is about 50 minutes.
Safe travels!

It’s Varenna not Vareena and no, there will be no taxi waiting at the Varenna-Esino train station.

Just take ferries to different towns on the lake. No tour is needed.
This is a small town so no taxis will be waiting at the train station. Call your hotel in Varenna when you know what time you’ll arrive and ask them to arrange transportation to their hotel. You can probably walk as it is downhill.
For your lodging in Milan, I highly recommend
Antica Locanda Leonardo, very close to “The Last Supper.” Get tickets for “The Last Supper” as soon as they are available for your dates.
Yes, book a hotel at MXP Milan for the night before your flight. We always stay at Hotel Villa Malpensa. It has excellent dining for your farewell to Italy dinner.
