Should I buy vaporetto passes for the family on line? Is it just a voucher and then we still have to get in a line to get the pass or is it the actual pass that can be validated on each ride? How much is each individual ride if we don't buy a pass? Do you buy those at a window or at a kiosk of some sort? Thank you.
If you are talking about the vaporetto in Venice, it's 7€ for a single ride! it's good for 1 hour in 1 direction, but you can also hop on and off at stops and change boats during that time. As fas as I know the pass has to be validated each time you board - I'm not sure if you buy online if it's a voucher or an actual pass or if you have to take the voucher and pick up a plastic pass
If you buy it online you still have to go pick it up, so there is no advantage. It is not plastic but a card with a magnetic strip. You validate either a card or an individual ticket by holding it up near the machine and listen for the beep to show it is good to go. Watch others doing it if you are confused.
Buy the pass when you get to Venice. There are sevearl ticket booths outside the train station. The pass is very handy as some stops don't have a ticket booth. So if you don't have a ticket you have to walk to the next stop. Having the pass you just hop and on and off. As mentioned above you do need to validate it each time. There are machines on the dock for that.
There is at least one HelloVenezia booth just outside the train station on the Grand Canal. If you are arriving by plane, you can buy these tickets, along with a ticket on the bus to the Piazzale Roma at the airport. If you purchase online, you can pick up your pass at either of the locations above or at other HelloVenezia kiosks.
There's more to the validation than just waiting for the beep. It will also beep - differently - if it has a problem. You should wait for the green light to flash at the same time as the beep. If there is a problem the red light will flash and the unhappy beep will sound. The screen will say what the problem is. If the green light flashes the screen will say how much time remains on the card.
And, no, I've never worked out what the star button or plus or minus keys do.
