Last time in Venice, to get to the airport, we took the ACTV vaporetto to Piazzale Roma then walked over and bought tickets for the bus to the airport. I can't remember exactly how long it took, but it did seem like quite a long time just to get to the airport. My question is twofold 1) is there a vaporetto that goes directly to the airport from one of the major stops - we will be in San Lio so closest is the Rialto stop. And 2) can anyone recommend which way is better to get to Venice Marco Polo: bus or vaporetto? Our flight is at 11:45 am.
As a side note, in the previous visit, we made an expensive mistake, in buying bus tickets for one bus line but got on the wrong bus. It took us to the airport, but the agent walking through the bus checking tickets gave us a very hefty fine. I mention it to raise alert to the savvy readers here; don't make the same mistake we did.
Thank you in advance.
Alilaguna.it is the website you need. Look for information on the Orange Line.
Here's the timetable for the orange line.
Another alternative is to take the vaporetto to Piazzale Roma and then take a regular land taxi to the airport rather than the bus. Not the cheapest way, just another possibility.
The Alilaguna takes an hour (57 minutes) to go from the Rialto stop to the airport, so it is not much faster. But it is direct, so you do not have to change transport modes. You can buy your ticket in advance ( it is different from a vaporetto ticket) to save €1, or on board. Make sure you understand which boarding dock at Rialto it uses, and get there early. If they are using the smaller boats that day, they can fill up at Rialto.
