Does a pass for unlimited use of the vaporetti also cover fare for crossing the Grand Canal using the traghetti, or is that a completely different system?

No it doesn't. Traghetti are strictly cash.

The good news is that the Traghetti are very cheap...50 cents (Euro).

My husband likes to call the traghetti the "cheapest Gondola ride" in Venice.
