Has anyone been with a group who has taken a van rather than the train? With 5 travlers I'm wondering if a van would not only be easier but cheaper?

We didn't take a van, but used a driver for 45 euros (there were 3 of us) I found this much easier than taking the train from the airport and then trying to find our apartment.

For our group of 6 we used the shared service from
www.airportshuttle.it. They also have vans for private use also, check their website for rates.

You can check with Stefano at romecabs.com for a transfer. His company gets very high praise on this and other sites. Let him know the size of your party and he'll send the appropriate size car.
