Are guides needed or do audio guides suffice here? Or In fact is less more and unless one needs every detail to appreciate historic treasures, might one enjoy their own thoughts amidst these wonders?

We used good guide books. We were glad that we stayed very near the temples with views of them.

For the temples I feel less is more. Look up information if you really want it. While there, depending on time of year, there are plenty of tour groups blocking the temples’ views with guides who can’t move the group off to the side so others can enjoy them too. You could get close to one of those and listen in if you felt the need.
