We purchased several Trenitalia train tickets and have the tickets on our phone. I keep reading that it is necessary to have the train tickets "validated" before boarding the train. How do we do so, with the tickets on our phones? Thanks!
E-tickets or the tickets you buy online do not need to be validated: the conductor scans the bar code on your mobile device or if you print at home your print out of a PDF.
Only the tickets bought from a machine or customer service agent at the train station while in Italy need to be validated. Those are just for the regionale or short distance trains and not for the high speed or Frecciarosa trains that come with a seat assignment.

As mentioned in the previous reply, electronic tickets don't need to be validated. Tickets for the express trains (Freccia, Intercity) will show a PNR code and that's all you need. Tickets for express trains don't have to be validated anyway, since they're specific to train, date and departure time and can only be used on ONE train.
Advance purchase tickets for Regionale trains are pre-validated, and can be used within four hours of the departure time stated on the ticket. Only locally purchased Regionale tickets have to be validated. That also applies to bus, metro and other forms of transit.
