Just bought my ticket online for Milan to Florence... Does this ticket need to be validated before boarding or do you just board the train and the conductor looks at your ticket?

Christy, AFAIK, you don't need to validate a ticket with reservations, as it's specific to a particular train and departure time. BE SURE that you board the train specified on the ticket (ie: ES 9708). If you board any other train, you could face hefty fines. Your ticket should specify your Car No. (Carrozza) and Seat No. (Posti). Happy travels!

If your train is for a specific time, with a specific seat assignment, on a specific date then it won't need to be validated. It can only be used on that particular train. If it's for a regional train which has no seat assignments and is not for a specific time then you will need to validate it. without knowing what type of ticket it is it's hard to give you a definite answer.
