Valentine's Day Surprise

Thinking about surprising my wife with a quick trip to Italy for Valentine's Day. Would be using FF points but need to fly into/out of Rome. She really loved Florence when she visited years ago, but would it be too cold in February. Any other recommendations for romantic destinations close to Rome by train where the weather might be better? Thanks.

Brandon, Given the time of year, I'd suggest leaving Florence for another visit. Spend a couple of days in Rome to get over jet-lag and then head for Sorrento and the Amalfi coast, as the weather should be warmer (no guarantees, of course). It makes a good "home base" for exploring that area. I've never been to Sorrento in February, but suspect it will be a bit "quiet". You could consider day trips to Positano, Pompeii (or other historic sites), and perhaps a trip to the Isle of Capri (bring money!). Given the occasion if you want to treat your Wife to a fantastic dining experience, I'd suggest a fine hot meal at This Restaurant in Sorrento (it will be a splurge though!). If the link doesn't work, try a Browser other than FireFox. Happy travels!

What a lovely and romantic plan! How many days/nights will you have on on the ground? Will there be time for Rome and one other location, perhaps? Rome deserves 4 nights minimum, IMHO, especially since arrival day is not really a full energy touring day. To get an idea of what you can expect, http://www.weatherunderground.com has a trip planner feature that provides weather information for 10 years. Simply enter your dates and see what has happened for the past 10 years. Rome and south are the best I think. Sorrento might be a good choice for a few days outside of Rome with a little more sun and moderate temperatures.

Thanks Laurel. It would probably be around a week, maybe 6-7 nights. Since my wife has spent some time in Rome I'd probably want to limit it to perhaps 2 nights to spend some time either in Florence, which she adored, or places south of Rome which she has not visited. I think I'm deciding between Florence and Tuscany or south, like Sorrento and Amalfi Coast/Capri.
