We will be in Val di Non and Trentino areas in late Sept 2023 for about a week visiting Sfruz [family roots], Smarano and Segno. Planning to do many day hikes around this area. Internet is full of gorgeous parks and hikes within 1-2 hour drive from there. We would welcome any recommendations for specific hikes, towns to explore, restaurants and lodging, etc in this area. Thanks so much!
My family is also from the Val di Non. Although I haven’t hiked in the area there are lots of opportunities. This website lists many https://www.visitvaldinon.it/en/activities/-b-walking-b
Thanks Kathleen. I love the visitvaldinon website. Too many beautiful places to choose from!

Amrnxo, does your trip include the Dolomites? The Val Gardena is less than a 2 hour drive from the Val di Non and hiking there is spectacular. Lifts start to shut down late Sept early Oct.
Kathleen,
The pics of Val Gardena area and other areas just east of Bolzano like Val di Funes https://anywhereweroam.com/val-di-funes/ are stunning. We're trying to decide whether to skip the days we planned to spend around Lake Garda and instead go to Bolzano and Val Gardena / Val di Funes area after Sfruz. There are also beautiful park areas for hiking in the foothills of dolomites to the west of Sfruz. So many possible places. We only have 14 full days in Italy and also will be staying a few days in Bologna. I'd love to hear more about your time in Val di Gardena area including specific hikes or towns you liked and lodging if you stayed there. Thanks! Anne
Ann, So many places and so little time! The Val di Non and Brenta Dolomites are beautiful but we really were wowed by the Dolomites( east of Bolzano). We stayed in Ortisei and from there you can access 3 lifts: Alpe de Siusi, Rasciasa and Seceda (although at present the Seceda lift is under maintenance- hopefully open before end of summer). We did hikes from all 3 and also from the other lifts in the area. The combination of hikes is really endless and easy to customize according to desires and abilities.
Thanks for info about the parts of the Dolomites you loved, Kathleen. What month were you there? Also, did you have a car in Ortisei? If so, can you share any pros/cons about having a car or using public transport around that area? If a car is needed to get to trailheads or other small valleys like Val di Funes, is parking difficult to find? We'll have a car for the Trentino/Sfruz area and could keep it longer if need be for that area as well. Thanks again for the info.

We had a car but didn’t leave the Val Gardena. The bus system between towns is great and our hotel gave us a free bus pass so we were able to get to all the lifts offered on the Val Gardena Lift Pass https://www.valgardena.it/en/summer-holidays-dolomites/mobility/gardena-card/ I believe you can get a bus (or taxi/private driver) from Bolzano if you wanted to drop the car there.
We didn’t need to use our car at all once we arrived in Ortisei. I haven’t been to the Val di Funes so don’t know what would work best there. We stayed at Hotel Garni Villa Park which was easy walking distance to the 3 lifts in Ortisei. Feel free to PM me if you want more details.
