I was was wondering where should we go Val D orcia region - 48 min drive from where are staying Arezzo and cortana regiona - 1 1/2 hours drive Perugia - around couple hours max WE have a car and we are deciding what is worth to explore on an extra day we have. can you also please list what cities in the region are best to visit. As for info purposes we would have already planned a day in chianti regions. thank you
There is so much to see in a day! I would suggest driving through the Val d'Orcia. Get off the autostrada and take the backroads. Where are you starting from? If you are beginning around Siena then drive south on the R2. You will get a much better feel for the countryside. Most interesting mid-sized towns are Pienza (greatly underrated by Rick), Montalcino and Montepulciano. If you only have a day, you should probably just pick one to explore. Pienza is fun to walk through and see the shops. If you go there, be sure to finish your visit by walking along the back side of the town that overlooks the Val d'Orcia - follow the signs that say "passeggiata." In addition to one of these small cities, try to drive through (and get out and walk around of course) a small hill town like Montisi. That's plenty for a day. Italy is not meant to be rushed!
Ditto what Bob said. Driving thru countryside and visit some combination of Pienza, montepulciano, Montalcino.
