Val d'Aosta or Breuil-Cervino from Milan?

Has anyone been to Val d'Aosta or Breuil-Cervino? I would be flying in a week early to go there before meeting my group in Bellagio in mid May. It doesn't seem that easy to get to... is the drive nice or scary? is there a train all the way to Breuil?

We were in Val d'Aosta in June for two nights. We picked up a rental car in Milan at Malpensa and drove. Easy drive with good roads. The town of Aosta itself is quite pretty with a lovely (and bit touristy) center which is walkable. Per advice from forum experts, we went the rental car route as opposed to public transportation (which is limited). We drove up in to some of the small towns, and also up to the Gran S. Bernardo pass (that's where some of the scary part comes in). Could have easily stayed another day or two.

With a week I would think you could easily have time to visit both places .

I think that Aosta and the surrounding valley is well worth visiting. The town center is lovely - a bit touristy but there are plenty of "authentic" places and local residents. If you get off the main street there are really nice shops and a couple of good open markets. The Roman ruins wind through and around the town and are interesting to visit.
If you venture down the valley it is dotted with many castles, some that can be visited and some that are private.
Regarding the drive north towards the St. Bernard Pass that the previous poster mentioned...you can go over the pass - super winding and narrow but spectacular views - OR - you can go through the tunnel under the mountains which is straight and easy to drive. That said, I don't think this is the route you will follow though. I can speak to the SS26...it's a beautiful road that is well-maintained as are most roads in the mountains in Italy. If you go to google maps, call up your route, and use the little yellow person-icon to drop down onto the road, you can virtually drive it to see what the road is like. I looked at the SR 46 from Breuil-Cervino just out of curiosity and it looks like a very nice route with beautiful scenery!

Can anyone recommend a b and b or farmhouse type of accommodation in the Val d'Aosta region? WE prefer not a larger hotel.
Thanks!
