Vacationing in Tuscany without renting a car

Our family (about 9 members) would like to spend the last 2 weeks of July in Italy, preferably Tuscany. We would like to rent a couple of cottages/apartments close to public transportation as we would prefer not to rent cars. We are open to going to other places like Lazio if it would work better for us. We would appreciate suggestions of places to stay.

The question is not much about whether you can reach a place with some form of crappy bus service in the countryside, but whether it would make for convenience in exploring the same countryside. For city-based trips (Pisa, Siena, Peruggia - not technically Toscana -, Lucca, Cinque Terre), using trains work, sometimes with longer trips than by car. For village hopping or going to vineyards and the like being without a car makes it challenging or very hard (in terms of travel time)
