I'll be in venice for 9 days over Easter, would it be smarter to get an apt. or stay in a hotel where I'd have the advantage of a concierge or someone to help w/day trips & the language?

You've hit upon one of the very best reasons to stay in a hotel/pensione. They can help you out with all that stuff. I suggest Pensione Guerrato in Venice, a RS fave for many years. We've stayed there twice and they are amazingly friendly and helpful. Very reasonable prices (for Venice), as well as a great location. http://www.pensioneguerrato.it/ Apartments are great if you want to be more on your own. Although some apartment owners will help out with the details, they're just not as available as the front desk at a hotel/pensione

If you decide to go the apartment route, I have a friend who rents apartments in Venice, he speaks fluent English and is very helpful in getting his guests whatever they need. I believe he takes payments in US dollars as well but not positive. The advantage of an apartment is that you can save a bundle on food since they have kitchens. Restaurants in Venice are very expensive. I don't know if I'm allowed to post links here so pm me if you'd like me to send you his website and email.
